The Power of Showing Up: Where Connections Begin

One of the things I enjoyed most about attending my first SAAGNY Fall Showcase in September was seeing the connections happening throughout the day. Longtime colleagues were catching up, new introductions were being made, and conversations were taking place that could lead to future business opportunities, collaborations or friendships.

I also had the pleasure of meeting members who were relatively new to the industry and enthusiastic about becoming more involved. Those conversations reminded me of something I've seen throughout my career in association management: sometimes, one introduction or invitation is all it takes to encourage someone to become more engaged.

I've watched individuals attend their first association event, become committee volunteers, eventually serve on boards, and grow into respected leaders within their professions. Not everyone chooses that path, and that's perfectly fine. There are many ways to participate in an association and benefit from the relationships and opportunities it offers.

Over these first several weeks, I've also had the opportunity to meet with SAAGNY's Board and several committees. I've been impressed by the time and energy our volunteers contribute, often while balancing the demands of their own businesses and careers. Their commitment plays an important role in making SAAGNY what it is today.

As we look toward 2027, we're reviewing feedback from the Fall Showcase and considering how our events, programs, and member opportunities can continue to evolve. Hearing from members and having volunteers involved in those conversations helps us make informed decisions about what comes next.

Of course, getting involved doesn't always mean joining a committee or taking on a leadership role. Sometimes it's simply attending an event, reconnecting with a colleague, or introducing yourself to someone new.

Our December 3 Holiday Party at Copperhill in Williston Park is a perfect opportunity to do just that. I hope you'll join us for an evening to reconnect with industry friends, meet some new faces, and enjoy time together before the busy holiday season wraps up.

As we approach the end of the year, I encourage you to think about the connections you've made through SAAGNY and perhaps one new way you'd like to participate in the coming year. We have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers, and I would be happy to work with them to help you find opportunities that match your interests.

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you in December and continuing to get to know the people who make this community so special.
