Twelve Past Presidents of SAAGNY gathered with some current board members for an evening of camaraderie, dinner, and sharing stories from the past. This was the second Annual Past President Dinner held in New York City.

These personalities helped shape SAAGNY into the rich organization it is today.  Through the reminiscing, laughs, and stories those that could not join us, were there in spirit.   Thank you to everyone who joined us!

It is with great sadness that the Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) announces the passing of Past President, Hall of Fame Member, and Honorary Life Member, John Pagano.  John was a tireless volunteer, industry legend, and a friend to many.  Our deepest sympathies to his wife Laura and his daughters.

As his family announced the passing of John Pagano, CAS, the promotional industry took time to pause and remember a friend, a mentor, and a larger than life personality whose presence cannot be replaced.

John began his career after college at Latama Inc., which he left to form JAC Marketing.  He will best be remembered as one of the northeast’s most well-known and respected multi-line representatives.  His storied career covered many years and many miles, and ultimately lead his enshrinement in the SAAGNY Hall of Fame.

His family has been overwhelmed by the remembrances and words of support and kindness…many tinged with tears and even more with humor.  John’s no-filtered approach to speaking his mind might have raised a few eyebrows over the years, but people always knew where they stood with him.  When she learned of John’s passing, Eileen Lynch of Bic Graphic said, “May he rest in peace – but he is probably telling God a thing or two”.

Perhaps it was his outspokenness that lent itself to his becoming such a renowned mentor and friend to so many people.  Whether you wanted it or not, John was at the ready with constructive criticism and helpfulness.  Mike Schenker, now of GCPPA, remembers how, when John was a multi-line rep working with him, he would critique Mike’s presentation, clothes, shoes…all for what Mike believes was his ultimate betterment.

John’s personality might have only matched by his personal style and flair.  Ike Haskins, a former industry supplier rep, remembered, “He would always straighten my tie and say, ’Now you're ready…go get’em Ike’. I know there is an angel in heaven straightening his wings saying, ‘Now you're ready…go get’em John’”.

John’s status was never in question.  Christine Lovell of ASI said, “John was a rock star in our industry and a person that was loved by everyone. His smile was infectious and he will be missed”.  Former industry supplier Rick Friedman remembered, “We traveled together for three to four months a year. I have such vivid memories of those great times. An awful lot of my younger life was spent being schooled and taught by (John)”.

John Pagano will be remembered for his legacy of greatness, warmth, humanity and professionalism.  He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Laura, and his daughters Patty, Francesca and Catherine, as well as their spouses and children, and an entire industry who will remember his grace, style and personality.

Funeral services were held privately.  The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

As you know by now, Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas Gulf Coast late Friday night, bringing heavy rain to the entire region. Massive flooding in the Houston area has closed many businesses and caused the Houston Area Promotional Products Association (HPPA) to postpone its Hot Stuff Expo. The show was scheduled for Tuesday with 220 exhibitors and more than 700 distributors in attendance at the NRG Center in Houston. The rain continues to fall, and flood waters continue to rise, which means many months of cleanup and rebuilding ahead for impacted families and businesses.

So far, 18 counties have been declared a state of disaster by the federal government, and PPAI has activated the Regional Association Council Business Recovery Fund for businesses located in the designated counties. The fund can help replace lost equipment and supplies—computers, cell phones, office supplies, promotional products catalogs and samples—provide a work area, or give other assistance as needed to get a business up and running as soon as possible. Those in the designated counties that need assistance can fill out the assessment here: http://www.regionalassociation.org/business-recovery-fund/brf-assistance.

PPAI also issued a member alert on Friday to all businesses in the region notifying them that it was opening its headquarters in Irving, Texas, (about 400 miles north of Houston) to industry members displaced by the storm. In an email from PPAI President and CEO Paul Bellantone, the Association offered its office space, phone, fax, wifi, copiers, restrooms and showers to allow industry members to continue business until their offices or home offices were available for occupancy. A special email address and phone extension have been set up to handle requests: MYPPAI@ppai.org or 888-I-AM-PPAI, extension 3280.

Some Houston area suppliers and distributors are reporting they are safe and dry, although many are closed due to flooded roads. A number of distributors in the Houston area are also closed because of flooded roads and to ensure the safety of employees. However, many are working from home and can respond to email at this point.

Check the PPAI Publications website for the status on member companies at http://pubs.ppai.org.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted in any way by this storm and its aftermath.

Lots of opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones!  Thank you everyone who came to the game!
